Kabambe Calls for United National Action as UTM Extends Lifeline to Flood Victims in Dwangwa

By Suleman Chitera

UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has renewed his call for collective national action to address recurring floods, saying Malawi must urgently invest in proper human settlements and effective drainage systems to protect vulnerable communities.

Speaking on Wednesday in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota, while comforting families displaced by floods, Kabambe said the disasters are a clear reminder of the growing impact of climate change and the need for coordinated efforts between communities, government, and development partners.

Kabambe emphasized that flooding can no longer be treated as an isolated or seasonal problem but as a national challenge requiring shared understanding, long-term planning, and decisive action.

“As UTM, we have come with assistance, but the scale of this problem shows that no single group can manage it alone. Communities, government, and well-wishers across the country must work together to find lasting solutions,” said Kabambe.

In a strong show of solidarity, Kabambe donated relief items valued at approximately K12 million, including 200 bags of 10-kilogramme flour, sacks, and K2 million in cash to be distributed among the affected households. He said the donation reflects UTM’s commitment to standing with Malawians in times of crisis and responding to people’s needs beyond political lines.

Traditional Authority Kanyenda, Village Head Simeon Kanyenda—himself a flood victim—praised Kabambe and the UTM Party for the timely intervention, saying the support has brought relief and renewed hope to families who lost their homes and livelihoods.

“This assistance has come at a time when people were losing hope. We are grateful that UTM has not forgotten us,” said Kanyenda.

Kabambe reiterated that while humanitarian aid is important, prevention remains key, calling for improved land-use planning, proper drainage infrastructure, and climate-resilient development to safeguard communities from future disasters.

The Dwangwa visit once again positioned Kabambe as a leader advocating people-centered solutions and practical action in the face of climate-related challenges affecting thousands of Malawians.
