Police in Lilongwe have arrested former Cabinet Minister Sosten Gwengwe in a development that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has confirmed the arrest, with party spokesperson Jessie Kabwila saying the party is yet to be informed of the reasons behind the move. Kabwila told the media moments after the arrest that Gwengwe is currently being detained at Lumbadzi Police Station.

“As of now, we have not been briefed on the charges. We are still seeking clarity from the relevant authorities,” Kabwila said.

By the time of filing this report, police had not issued any official statement, fueling speculation and raising questions over the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the former minister, who until recently held influential positions in government.

Gwengwe’s arrest comes at a time of heightened political tension, with growing public scrutiny over governance, accountability and the rule of law. The lack of immediate explanation from law enforcement has already triggered intense debate among political observers and the public.

Authorities are expected to break their silence in the coming hours as pressure mounts for transparency and due process in a case involving a high-profile political figure.

More details to follow as the story develops.
