The President of People’s Voice Party Lawrence Mkuzi Banda, has hailed State President Arthur Peter Mutharika for what he describes as a “powerful, focused and people-centered” State of the Nation Address (SONA), saying the speech has rekindled hope and strengthened public trust in government leadership.
Speaking in reaction to the address delivered before Parliament, Banda said the SONA was not merely ceremonial rhetoric but a policy-driven roadmap responding directly to the socio-economic pressures facing Malawians.
“This was a statement grounded in practical solutions. It addressed bread-and-butter issues affecting ordinary citizens and provided measurable interventions,” Banda said.
Rebuilding Trust Through Action
According to Banda, the President’s emphasis on economic stabilization, fiscal discipline, and agricultural productivity signals a leadership appromach anchored in delivery rather than promises. He noted that Malawians have endured prolonged economic strain characterized by high commodity prices, supply chain disruptions, and reduced purchasing power.
“What citizens wanted was clarity and direction. The President has demonstrated that he understands the gravity of the situation and is taking decisive steps,” Banda added.
He further argued that the tone and content of the address have restored confidence among citizens who had grown skeptical about the pace of reforms.
Maize Availability as a Turning Point
Banda singled out the availability and affordability of maize as tangible proof of the administration’s commitment to safeguarding food security. He described the improved supply and price stabilization of the staple crop as a “practical intervention with immediate impact.”
“For a country where maize is central to household consumption, ensuring adequate supply at affordable prices is not a minor achievement. It directly affects food security, inflation control, and social stability,” he said.
Banda maintained that stabilizing maize markets demonstrates policy coordination between agriculture, trade, and fiscal authorities—an approach he believes is critical to long-term economic recovery.
A Leadership Reset
The People’s Voice leader characterized the SONA as a leadership reset, arguing that the President has repositioned himself as a reform-oriented statesman committed to rescuing the economy and restoring institutional efficiency.
“This address has reassured Malawians that the State President is not detached from their realities. He has shown readiness to act decisively and strategically,” Banda stated.
He concluded by urging stakeholders—including the private sector, civil society, and development partners—to support the government’s outlined agenda, emphasizing that national recovery requires collective responsibility.
As political reactions continue to unfold, Banda’s endorsement signals growing support among certain political actors who view the SONA as a defining moment in rebuilding public confidence and steering Malawi toward economic stability.
