A grouping of members from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), operating under the banner MCP Revolution for Change of Leadership, has openly called on party president Lazarus Chakwera to step down, accusing him of failing to provide effective leadership.

Speaking to the media in Lilongwe on Saturday, the group’s leader, Samson Chaziya, said the party is in urgent need of fresh leadership capable of rebuilding the organisation and restoring its political strength ahead of upcoming electoral battles.

Chaziya argued that the current leadership has not delivered the direction and strategy expected by party supporters, warning that the MCP risks losing political ground if internal reforms are not implemented soon.

“The party needs a new vision and renewed leadership if it is to regain momentum and effectively prepare for the future,” Chaziya said.

He further urged Chakwera to convene a party convention where members would have the opportunity to democratically elect new leaders who can steer the party towards the 2030 elections.

According to the grouping, holding an open convention would give party members a chance to assess the current leadership and chart a new course for the party’s future.

The development signals growing internal pressure within the MCP, raising questions about unity and leadership direction as the party begins to position itself for the next electoral cycle.
