UTM Party leader, Dalitso Kabambe, has called on women across Malawi to take a more active role in politics and public service, drawing inspiration from the life and legacy of the late Shupikire Chavundikira.

Kabambe made the remarks at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe on Thursday, where family members, party officials and sympathisers gathered to receive Chavundikira’s body ahead of burial in Kasungu.

He described the late Chavundikira as a dedicated and resilient leader whose contribution to both politics and business left a lasting mark.

“During the campaign period for the 2025 elections, I learned a lot from the late Chavundikira, especially when she represented our party as a parliamentary candidate for Kasungu Municipality,” Kabambe said. “Her commitment and passion for serving people should be a benchmark for women aspiring to lead.”

Kabambe stressed that increasing women’s participation in politics is critical to strengthening democratic governance and ensuring inclusive development in the country.

Member of Parliament for Kasungu North East, Osward Chirwa, also paid tribute to the late Chavundikira, describing her as a hardworking and visionary individual.

“We have lost a person who was deeply committed to uplifting communities through both business and political leadership,” said Chirwa.

Chavundikira, who once served as Deputy Mayor for Kasungu Municipality, died on Wednesday at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe after battling cancer.

Her death has drawn an outpouring of grief from political leaders and community members, many of whom have hailed her as a role model for women in leadership.

She is expected to be laid to rest in Kasungu on Friday.
