Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE) has condemned former President Lazarus Chakwera’s recent remarks, describing them as divisive and a threat to national unity. The grouping took issue with Chakwera’s assertion that some liberation fighters had “hands stained with blood,” calling it a “gross insult” to the country’s heroes and their sacrifices.
In a statement, CfCE expressed disappointment and outrage at Chakwera’s comments, made during a funeral ceremony in Malembo Village, saying they risk undermining peace and stability. “We will not stand idly by while divisive rhetoric threatens the peace and stability of our country,” said Edward Kambanje, co-chairperson of CfCE ¹.
The organization has called on Chakwera to apologize and urged leaders to focus on unity and development, emphasizing that Malawians have chosen a path of peace. CfCE also appealed to the public to reject divisive politics and work towards a better future.
Chakwera’s spokesperson, Gift Nankhuni, has not commented on the matter.
