In a bold assessment that is likely to stir debate, media practitioner Suleman Chitera has hailed President Arthur Peter Mutharika for what he describes as a rare commitment to meritocracy in public appointments.

Chitera argued that during Mutharika’s leadership, board appointments were largely driven by competence, professionalism, and strategic value rather than political convenience—a sharp contrast, he suggests, to what is being witnessed in some quarters today.

“Institutions thrive when qualified individuals are entrusted with responsibility,” Chitera said, emphasizing that Mutharika’s selections helped stabilize key public bodies and improve operational efficiency.
He further noted that many of those appointed brought credibility and technical expertise, enabling institutions to function with a degree of independence and effectiveness often lacking in politically influenced systems.

Chitera did not shy away from drawing comparisons, stating that Malawi’s development agenda risks being undermined when appointments are based on loyalty instead of capability.
His remarks come at a time when scrutiny over public sector appointments continues to intensify, with growing calls for transparency, accountability, and a return to merit-based governance.

“Malawi deserves leadership that prioritizes national interest over political appeasement,” Chitera added, reinforcing his view that Mutharika’s approach offers lessons worth revisiting.
The comments are expected to ignite fresh discussion on governance standards and leadership accountability in the country.
