A Chiradzulu-based activist, political and social commentator, Suleman Chitera, has urged Malawian President Arthur Peter Mutharika to recognise and appreciate activists, journalists, and grassroots defenders who stood firmly behind him and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during difficult political times and election campaigns.
Speaking during a political discussion, Chitera said many activists and independent journalists sacrificed their time, resources, and personal safety to defend Mutharika and promote the DPP agenda when the political environment was hostile.

According to Chitera, several individuals used social media platforms, community engagements, and independent media channels to counter opposition narratives and mobilise support for Mutharika across the country.
He stressed that loyalty and sacrifice should not be forgotten once political victories are achieved.
“There are activists and journalists who stood with Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika during challenging times. Some defended the party without any support, while others faced criticism and intimidation because of their political stance. They deserve recognition and appreciation,” said Chitera.
The commentator further noted that recognising loyal supporters would help strengthen unity, motivation, and trust within the party’s support base ahead of future political battles.

He also encouraged political leaders to build stronger relationships with independent media voices and youth activists who continue to influence public opinion across Malawi.
Political analysts say activists and online commentators are increasingly playing a major role in shaping political narratives, especially among young voters who heavily rely on digital platforms for news and political information.
