Legendary Malawi Queens shooter Mwawi Kumwenda is set to rejoin the national team on July 15 in England ahead of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Vitumbiko Gubuduza confirmed that Kumwenda will link up with the Queens in Manchester before travelling with the team to Scotland for the tournament.

Gubuduza said the experienced shooter has already started preparations while based in Australia, following a training programme similar to that of the national team.FDH Bank Bails Out Queens

“Mwawi is training from Australia and is on an exercise regimen that is similar to the Queens. She is in touch with the Queens through consultant coach Debbie Fuller and the team manager every day for tracking purposes,” Gubuduza said.

Kumwenda is returning to the Malawi Queens after a three-year absence, having last featured for the national team at the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

She has won several individual awards, including the Netball World Cup top scorer accolade in 2014 and 2018. In 2015, she was named the tournament’s top scorer and Player of the Tournament.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games will mark Kumwenda’s fourth appearance at the global competition, with her experience expected to provide a major boost to the Malawi Queens’ campaign.

Her return adds strength and leadership to the squad as Malawi prepares to compete against some of the world’s best netball teams in Glasgow.Home
