The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has ordered Airtel Malawi Plc and Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) to compensate customers after the two mobile network operators increased tariffs without following the legal procedures required under the country’s communications laws.
In a directive issued to the companies, MACRA said the operators failed to notify the public at least seven days before implementing the new prices, a mandatory requirement designed to protect consumers from unexpected tariff changes.CAMA Demands MACRA to Reverse Airtel and TNM Data Tariff Hikes Over Alleged Legal Violations
MACRA Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma said the companies breached Section 76 of the Communications Act of 2016, which requires telecommunications operators to publicly announce any proposed tariff increase through at least two newspapers circulating in Malawi before the changes take effect.
The regulator said customers who purchased services under the higher tariffs between 26 June and 2 July 2026 were unfairly affected and are therefore entitled to compensation.
As part of the compensation, Airtel Malawi and TNM have been ordered to provide affected customers with additional bundles equivalent to the value they would have received under the previous tariff structure.TNM Products And Services To Go Up Effective Tuesday
MACRA has further directed both companies to complete the compensation exercise by 31 July 2026, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that telecommunications providers comply with consumer protection laws.
The decision is expected to bring relief to millions of mobile subscribers who were impacted by the unannounced price increases and sends a strong warning that operators must strictly adhere to legal and regulatory requirements before adjusting service charges.High Internet Costs Squeeze Students, Youth in Mzuzu as Data Prices Rise
