The Malawi Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens from hunger, with Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamveka announcing that K100 billion has been allocated to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to strengthen the country’s strategic maize reserves.

Mwanamveka made the assurance while responding to concerns raised by Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi, who indicated that the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) had not received sufficient funding to purchase maize from farmers.

Addressing the issue, the Finance Minister emphasized that the government remains fully committed to ensuring adequate food supplies across the country and will not allow any Malawian to die of hunger.

He explained that although NFRA already has maize stored in its strategic grain reserves, the Treasury has released an additional K100 billion to enable the agency to procure more maize and further strengthen national food security.

Mwanamveka stressed that the funding demonstrates the government’s determination to safeguard households against possible food shortages and maintain sufficient maize stocks to meet national demand.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over food availability and the financing of maize purchases, as many Malawians continue to rely on affordable maize supplies during the current agricultural season.

The government’s decision to channel substantial resources to NFRA is expected to complement ongoing food security efforts while ensuring the country maintains adequate strategic grain reserves capable of responding to any future shortages.

Mwanamveka reiterated that protecting citizens from hunger remains one of the government’s highest priorities, assuring the nation that every necessary measure will be taken to guarantee access to food.

“The government will not allow any citizen to die of hunger,” the Finance Minister said, underscoring the administration’s commitment to national food security.
