The Non-Governmental Regulatory Authority NGORA has reported that Non-Governmental organizations in the country have spent 412 billion kwacha over the last year.
This is contained in an analysis report from the 2021 Audited financial reports submitted by 307 NGOs out of the expected 715.
According to the report, the the expenditure for 2021 by NGOs has increased compared to the 244 billion kwacha in the 2020 from the 228 NGOs that submitted their audited financial reports.
The report further indicates that with an average income of 1.4 billion kwacha in the year in under review, an estimated annual income of 1 trillion kwacha for the sector was calculated.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Nina Ghambi, Vice Chairperson for NGORA said they are still finding it hard to see NGOs contribution to the country’s economy as only 43 percent of them submitted the audited financial annual reports.
Ghambi added that they will be forcing NGOs to reveal their sources of funding which has been a concern for long time resulting in failure for NGO Regulatory Authority to effectively monitor and promote accountability in the sector.
Meanwhile, Patricia Kaliati Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare called on all Non-Governmental organizations to comply with the law by submitting their financial audited reports which is paramount in promoting transparency and accountability.
