MCP, Don’t Be Fooled by NRB Statistics: Having an ID and Voting for MCP Are Two Different Things

By Collings Linyenga

The National Registration Bureau (NRB) recently announced a remarkable achievement: registering 12,287,349 individuals aged 16 and above for national identity cards (IDs) since 2016, exceeding its initial target of 11.3 million. However, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) should not be misled into thinking that this translates to automatic MCP votes.

Possessing a national ID and voting for MCP are two distinct things. Not everyone with an ID is even an eligible voter. The law allows 16-year-olds to obtain an ID, but they cannot vote. The NRB statistics do not necessarily reflect the number of registered voters.

Moreover, the majority of those who have IDs are struggling to make ends meet due to the current economic hardships, including high inflation rates, unemployment, and lack of access to basic necessities like healthcare and education. These Malawians are not concerned with mere statistics; they want tangible solutions to their problems.

MCP should focus on winning the hearts and minds of voters through tangible policies and actions, rather than relying on NRB statistics. The people of Malawi deserve substance over empty claims.

Let’s separate the facts from fiction and not be swayed by misleading numbers. The true test of MCP’s popularity will be at the ballot box, where voters will decide based on performance, not mere possession of an ID.
