Five foreign nationals, including Russians and Armenians, have been arrested in Chikwawa District for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities, authorities have confirmed.

The suspects were reportedly found in possession of various minerals, drones, paksets, and other mining equipment during the operation that led to their arrest.

According to Nkasala, the matter is being treated as a serious security concern due to the nature of the equipment discovered and the suspects’ alleged unauthorized activities.
“The suspects are in the country illegally and are being treated as a security threat,” said Nkasala.
The five foreign nationals are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact type or quantity of minerals recovered, nor the identities of the suspects. The arrest comes amid growing concerns over illegal mining activities in Malawi, particularly involving foreign nationals operating without proper licenses or documentation.
