The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) elective convention has officially commenced, drawing notable attention from across Malawi’s political landscape. The event, held at the Golden Peacock in Lilongwe, has seen a significant presence from several major opposition parties, including representatives from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and the People’s Party.
In an interview with MIJ Online,Clement Stambuli, the chairperson of the convention’s organizing committee, emphasized that the participation of these diverse opposition groups highlights a common objective. “The engagement of various opposition parties at this convention reflects our shared goal of fostering a collaborative political environment,” Stambuli remarked.
The convention is set to focus on important reforms, notably the refinement of AFORD’s constitution. This move is seen as a strategic effort to prepare for potential electoral alliances and enhance the party’s readiness for upcoming political challenges. The constitutional adjustments are anticipated to facilitate smoother cooperation with other political entities, paving the way for more effective joint efforts in future elections.
In a related development, Shadrick Namalomba, the National Publicity Secretary for the Democratic Progressive Party, reiterated that their attendance underscores a mutual objective with AFORD. Namalomba’s comments reflect a broader commitment to unity and strategic alignment among opposition parties as they navigate the political landscape leading up to the next electoral cycle.
