By Burnett Munthali

A van carrying goods valued at MK10 million caught fire at Molipa Hills in Machinga District yesterday due to a technical fault. The incident involved a vehicle operated by Symon Saidi, a driver for Moonpuff Company, and his assistant. The pair were en route from Chiponde to Blantyre when the fire broke out.

Machinga District Hospital Public Relations Officer, Wongani Nyirenda, confirmed that both individuals were receiving treatment at the hospital. “The driver sustained minor injuries, while his assistant suffered burns to the face and hands. Both are stable and recovering well,” Nyirenda said.

Liwonde Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Ulemu Kalua, also verified the incident, stating that no major injuries were reported at the scene. The fire is believed to have been caused by a technical fault in the vehicle.

The incident highlights the risks involved in the transportation of goods, but thanks to the quick response, the individuals involved are in stable condition. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
