Lets Go Register! ~ Mwakasungula

By Draxon Maloya

Governance and Human Rights  Advocate, Undule Mwakasungula has advised all eligible Malawians to go and get registered ahead of next year’s General Elections.

Mwakasungula’s call comes as the Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC has today commenced Phase one (1) of the voter registration for the 2025 General Elections which will run up to 3rd November 2024 in some districts in the country.

“This is an important opportunity for all eligible citizens to ensure they participate in the upcoming elections.

“It is important for every Malawian to understand that registering to vote  is a  constitutional right and a chance to elect leaders  of  their choice.

“If one does not register, he/she will not be able to vote in the September 16, 2025 elections, hence missing the chance to influence Malawi’s direction of his or her choice,” said Mwakasungula.

The electoral body is using the Election Management Devices (EMDs) to facilitate the registration process whose demonstrations were conducted a fortnight ago to familiarize stakeholders with the new technology.

The governance and human rights advocate has further called on civil society organizations to help play their rightful role in mobilizing Malawians to register in large numbers during this period.

MEC has launched the 2025 General Election and voter registration exercise with the theme; “Promoting Democratic Leadership Through Your Vote,” emphasizing the importance of voting as both a right and a civic duty.

To register, one must be a Malawian citizen, aged eighteen (18) and above, and in possession of a national ID card.

The first phase of the voter registration is being conducted in Chitipa, Karonga
