A devastating incident occurred on December 9, 2024, in Kadzitche Village, Traditional Authority Makhwira, Chikwawa District, where a 32-year-old man, Mayeso McDonald, took his own life by hanging himself in his house.
According to Constable Chancy Mfune, Deputy Publicist for Chikwawa Police Station, McDonald had borrowed K300,000 from a local businessman, agreeing to repay the loan in December after harvesting his rice.
Mfune said he squandered the money earned from selling his rice without informing his wife, leading to overwhelming debt and desperation.
“On December 9, 2024, McDonald’s wife left their home, unaware of the tragic events that would unfold. McDonald’s younger brother discovered his lifeless body hanging from the roof of their house, using a wrapper as a makeshift noose.
“The brother immediately informed their father, who then reported the incident to the Makhwira police unit,” he said.
Police officers, accompanied by medical personnel from Makhwira Health Center, visited the scene to conduct an investigation.
A postmortem examination revealed that McDonald’s death was caused by suffocation, secondary to strangulation.
Mayeso McDonald, a resident of Kadzitche Village, Traditional Authority Makhwira, Chikwawa District, will be deeply missed by his loved ones and community.
This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of debt and desperation.
