Police in Balaka have arrested a 28-year-old man, Edward Zero Muyaya, for allegedly possessing petroleum products without a permit.
According to the Public Relations Officer for Balaka Police Station, Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, the incident occurred on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at around 16:40 hours at Phalula Trading Centre.
“Muyaya, who hails from Chimzongo Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala, was found in possession of two jerry cans containing 140 litres of petrol,” he said.
M’bumpha said the suspect’s store, located near Phalula Market was raided by police detectives from Phalula Police Unit, following a tip-off.
He added: “The arrest and seizure of the petrol were made possible through the vigilance of the police and the cooperation of the community”
The suspect will soon appear before a court to answer charges of possessing petroleum products without a permit.
Meanwhile, police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal possession and trade of petroleum products.
