Authorities call for coexistence and political tolerance ahead of 2025 Elections

By Burnett Munthali

As Malawi gears up for its General Elections set for September 16, 2025, authorities have amplified calls for coexistence and political tolerance. Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu has emphasized the need for unity among Malawians, regardless of their political affiliations.

Reflecting on incidents of violence that marred the political landscape last year, Kunkuyu expressed concern over the role some political leaders played in fomenting divisions. He highlighted that moving forward, there is a pressing need for unity and peaceful coexistence to ensure a stable and productive election process.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Kunkuyu said, “As we prepare to enter election mode, let us remember that we are all Malawians first. Our political differences should not tear us apart. This is a time to strengthen our unity and embrace coexistence.”

Kunkuyu also called on all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, to work collaboratively to promote peace and inclusivity. He urged the nation to enter the New Year with renewed hope and a commitment to building a better Malawi.

Observers have noted that the upcoming elections are pivotal for Malawi’s democratic growth, and the call for tolerance is critical in avoiding a repeat of politically motivated violence.

Stakeholders across the political spectrum are being encouraged to use dialogue and issue-based campaigns as a means of addressing differences. As the election date draws closer, the emphasis on coexistence serves as a reminder that Malawi’s progress depends on collective effort and mutual respect among its citizens.
