The Center for Social Concern (CfSC) has launched the Mangochi Peace Games, a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting peace and co-existence among community members ahead of the September 16 general elections.
The peace games which kicked off on January 22, 2025, bring together young people from different political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs to participate in various sports and activities.
According to CfSC’s deputy director Father Mathew Bansseh the initiative seeks to foster a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding among the youth who are often vulnerable to manipulation and violence during election period.
“We believe that sports have the power to unite people and promote peaceful co-existence,” said father Bansseh.
“Through the Mangochi Peace Games, we aim to cleate a platform where young people can come together, build relationships and promote peace and understanding.”
The peace games feature activities including football and netball and the games are scheduled to take place in 8 TAs of Mponda, Chimwala, Jalasi, Makanjira, Namavi, Katuli, Nankumba and Bwananyambi in Mangochi District.
During the launch, the Ngoyi FC won a brand new football and cash amounting to MK 80, 000.00 by beating the Mangochi West United FC to 3 goals to 2 where the losers have taken home cash amounting to MK 80, 000.00 only.
Speaking during the same launch, Local Advisory Committee chair for Mangochi Bishop Peter Likagwa, said by bringing together young people from different backgrounds, the initiative aims to cleate a culture of peace and tolerance that will endure long after the elections are over.
