A Call for Free and Fair Elections: The Testing Moments Of Our Democracy

By Comrade jumbe

“The goat that sleeps in a leopard’s den should not be surprised when it is eaten.”

We cannot pretend to be surprised when technology designed for surveillance is later used to manipulate the will of the people.

The deployment of MACRA’s spying machines at this critical time raises serious concerns.

If the government claims these machines are for national security, then let them wait until after the elections. No technology should interfere with the people’s right to express their will freely.

Moreover, the method of vote counting must be transparent and credible. This is why manual counting should be the primary method—so that every ballot is accounted for, and no dark forces can tamper with the results

. “A man who trusts a hungry hyena to guard his goats will wake up to an empty kraal.” Let us not place our democracy in the hands of systems that can be manipulated behind closed doors.

Opposition Must Unite—The Time to Act is Now

We cannot afford to let history repeat itself. “A fool is the one who trips over the same stone twice.”

If these concerns are not urgently addressed, opposition parties will only be playing along in a predetermined script. They will spend their resources campaigning, but the outcome will be decided elsewhere. This is not a warning—it is a reality staring us in the face.

To all political parties, candidates, and every Malawian who values democracy, the message is clear: Stand up now or forever hold your peace. We must demand fairness before it is too late. We must insist on reforms while we still can. “A canoe does not wait for a paddler who is still sleeping.” If we do not act now, we will wake up to an election that is nothing more than a coronation.

This is not just about 2025—it is about the future of democracy in Malawi. A fraudulent election is not just a loss for the opposition; it is a death sentence for the people’s voice. If our leaders are chosen for us, then we are no longer citizens—we are subjects.

Let us not be the generation that watched in silence as democracy was stolen in broad daylight. “When spiders unite, they can tie up a lion.” It is time to unite, time to demand justice, and time to ensure that the coming elections are truly free and fair.

The future of Malawi depends on what we do today. Let us not fail our children.
