Mwamulima Slams Government Over Abandoned Police Apartments in Mzuzu

Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City, Benex Mwamulima, has expressed frustration over the government’s neglect of three two-storey apartments for police officers in Area 4, Mzuzu.

The apartments, constructed by the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), have been left unfinished for a long time.

The Ministry of Lands and MHC have been exchanging blame for the delay, prompting Mwamulima to urge the Minister of Lands, Deus Gumba, to provide a timeline for the completion of the apartments and their handover to the Malawi Police Service.

“There is a huge risks faced by police officers living in unsecured areas due to the lack of proper housing. In response,” said Mwamlima.

In his response Minister (Gumba) assured Parliament that the government is committed to completing the houses.

“You may wish to know that the technical officers have been dispatched to assess the situation,” said Gumba.

The government had earlier announced plans to construct 10,000 houses nationwide for security agencies, with 4,000 allocated for the Malawi Police Service, 4,000 for the Malawi Defense Force (MDF), and 1,000 each for immigration and prison services.
