“Do Not Strangle the Voice of the People” — A Call of Conscience to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party

By Comrade jumbe

There is a saying among the elders: “When the moon is full, the wise do not chase shadows—they face the light.”

Today, we call upon Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to face the light of truth, justice, and democracy.

Power, like fire, is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. Once, you stood in the cold, demanding warmth from the flames of justice. Now that you sit near the hearth, do not throw water on those who now seek the same fire of fairness.

Remember: “The road you walk on today was cleared by others who walked before you.” MCP is in power because its predecessors allowed the rule of law to speak—not guns, not rigging, not manipulation.

Do not now poison the same well from which you drank in 2020.

There are clear signs, deeply worrying signs, that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is being subtly manipulated, its independence weakened, its soul bought by silence. But “even the sharpest knife cannot shave its own handle.” The people are watching.

Let it be known: we, the citizens of this land, will not bow to oppression wearing a democratic mask.

We demand:

A fresh voter registration exercise, for democracy without integrity is an insult to the ballot.

A thorough audit of the voters’ roll, for a flawed register is the first seed of stolen elections.

The disposal of Smartmatic machines, whose very presence raises alarm and doubt among voters.

The removal of all MCP members and sympathizers from strategic MEC positions, for the referee must never wear the jersey of the players.

We demand reasonable extension of the electoral process, to allow every Malawian to participate fully in shaping this nation’s future.

We speak not out of malice, but out of duty. “When the drumbeat changes, the dancer must adjust.”

You, Dr. Chakwera, once danced to the rhythm of change. Now the rhythm is justice once again—will you hear it?

We issue this warning with solemn hearts: If the Malawi Congress Party does not allow MEC to meet the demands of the people, we will seek justice in the courts.

We will not hesitate to pursue injunctions, legal remedies, and constitutional actions to defend what belongs to the people.

Do not strangle the voice of democracy. Do not silence the cries of fairness with bureaucracy.

“A leader who closes his ears to his people has already opened the gates of rebellion.”

Let Malawi remain a land of peace, yes—but also a land of justice.

We want peace, but not at the cost of being cheated.

We want unity, but not at the cost of being silenced.

We want development, but not built on the graves of stolen voices.

Remember this final proverb:
“You may outrun the man behind you, but you can never outrun your shadow.”

Do right by your people. Or the shadow of injustice will one day return to collect its debt.

My pen 🖊 is mightier than a sword.
