The Lilongwe City Council has officially announced the start of rehabilitation works on the Chipasula–Area 23 road, with construction set to begin on Tuesday.

This long-awaited project aims to improve road infrastructure in one of the capital city’s most congested and critical corridors, enhancing mobility for both motorists and pedestrians.

Speaking to the media, Director of Public Works at the Council, Julius Tsogolani, confirmed that the 2.5-kilometre road will be rehabilitated in two phases.

He explained that the first phase will cover a one-kilometre stretch and is budgeted at approximately K2 billion.

According to Tsogolani, the first phase is expected to be completed within a four-month period, barring any unforeseen disruptions.

He added that the second phase, which will cover the remaining 1.5 kilometres, will be planned based on prevailing economic conditions and potential escalation costs at the time of implementation.

“This road is important to the city’s development,” Tsogolani said, emphasizing the strategic significance of the route in connecting key residential and commercial areas.

He assured residents that the Council is committed to executing the project in line with engineering and safety standards to ensure long-term benefits.

“All resources and logistical arrangements are in place, and residents can expect to see meaningful progress within the set timeframe,” he added.

The Chipasula–Area 23 road has long been a concern for local residents due to its poor condition, which often leads to traffic congestion, increased travel times, and vehicle damage.

With the launch of this project, the Council hopes to alleviate those concerns while contributing to broader urban development efforts across Lilongwe.

Once completed, the road is expected to facilitate smoother traffic flow, reduce maintenance costs for vehicles, and promote economic activity in the surrounding areas.

The announcement has been welcomed by many residents, who have expressed optimism that the project will bring much-needed relief and improved connectivity.

As construction begins, the Council has urged road users to cooperate with contractors and observe traffic management guidelines that will be put in place during the rehabilitation period.

The Lilongwe City Council has also pledged to keep the public updated on the progress of the project through regular briefings and site visits.

This development marks another step in the Council’s broader strategy to upgrade urban infrastructure and meet the growing demands of the city’s expanding population.
