A group of concerned citizens regarding the Makanjira Road has issued a stern warning that they will take unspecified action if there are no concrete responses from the government concerning the construction of the road.

Speaking after holding demonstrations, one of the group’s leaders, Patrick Wasi, said they are tired of the government’s lies year after year. He stressed that they will no longer tolerate being deceived, especially since they are aware that the government already secured all the funds needed for the project.

Wasi also questioned the fairness of residents in the Makanjira area continuing to pay taxes when their money is being used to develop other regions. He, therefore, called on the police to stop collecting taxes from vehicles in the area.
In response, the District Commissioner, Davie Chigwenembe, advised the group to submit a formal letter to the appropriate office. Meanwhile, the Roads Authority revealed that the construction work has been awarded to Mota Engil and is currently undergoing necessary processes, including environmental protection measures.
According to the Roads Authority, the Mangochi-Makanjira Road project will cost 77 million US dollars, funded by the BADEA Bank, Kuwait Fund, Saudi Fund, OPEC Fund, and the Government of Malawi.
