Chakwera Orders Probe into Protest Violence, Demands Accountability

By Suleman Chitera, Lilongwe, June 28, 2025

President Lazarus Chakwera has directed state security agencies to launch a full investigation into the violence that marred recent protests in Lilongwe, calling the attacks and destruction of property “unacceptable” and demanding swift action against those responsible.

The President issued the directive before departing for Nigeria, instructing the agencies to compile and submit a preliminary report upon his return. Chakwera also reiterated the country’s constitutional right to peaceful protest, urging all Malawians to remain calm as the nation approaches the September 2025 elections.

“Every citizen has the right to express their views without fear of violence or intimidation,” said Chakwera. “I have asked our security institutions to act without delay to identify and bring to justice all those involved in orchestrating and executing these acts of violence.”

The President’s remarks come as public outcry grows over the conduct of law enforcement during the protests. Several human rights groups and civil society organizations have slammed the police for failing to protect peaceful demonstrators who were attacked by unidentified groups, some reportedly armed.

The Malawi Human Rights Commission and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation are among the organizations that have condemned the violence and the apparent inaction of police officers on the ground. Social media has been flooded with videos and testimonies alleging that security forces stood by as protesters were assaulted.

President Chakwera emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and lawfulness ahead of the crucial general elections. “Let us engage in dialogue, not destruction. The rule of law must prevail, and I expect nothing less from our security forces,” he said.

Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on the Inspector General of Police to take disciplinary action against officers who failed to intervene, with opposition leaders and legal experts calling for internal reviews and possible prosecutions.

As the country waits for the findings of the investigation, all eyes remain on how authorities will respond to demands for justice—and whether the promised accountability will materialize before Malawians head to the polls.
