Team Malawi shines at Region 5 Youth Games with silver, bronze and spirited performances

Malawi’s youth athletes continued to impress at the ongoing African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games being held in Windhoek and Swakopmund, Namibia.

The standout moment came in athletics, where Nathan Chisale secured Malawi’s first silver medal in the 3,000m race, clocking an impressive 8:38 seconds.

In the same discipline, Amanda Kondowe qualified for the 100m final, which is scheduled to take place today.

In the 800m race, Tadala Nazombe advanced to the girls’ final, while Chisomo Mchelenje progressed to the boys’ final, both of which are also being run today.

Additional relay events and races are expected to continue throughout the day.

In basketball, Malawi’s Under-16 girls team defeated Zambia with a commanding scoreline of 70 to 31.

They are scheduled to face South Africa today at 10am at the Showgrounds in Windhoek.

Meanwhile, the boys’ team put up a valiant effort but narrowly lost 70 to 76 against South Africa.

In boxing, Malawi begins its campaign today, with a boys’ 54kg bout against Eswatini, and a girls’ 57kg showdown with Lesotho.

The E-Sport tournament is set to start tomorrow, running from 9am to 4pm at the Vanir Micro-Sports Centre, with Malawi competing in E-Football and Street Fighting.

In football, Malawi’s boys’ team faces Namibia today at 3pm at the Hague Stadium in Windhoek, needing only a draw to qualify for the semi-finals.

The girls’ team will go head-to-head with Zimbabwe at 12pm at the University of Namibia Stadium and will need a win, alongside Namibia losing to Botswana, to progress to the semi-finals.

In judo, Team Malawi will participate in four weight categories—66kg, 60kg, 48kg, and 42kg—with matches beginning at 8am at the Showgrounds.

In netball, Malawi secured a narrow 48-46 victory over Zambia, booking their place in the semi-finals.

They will take on South Africa today at 3:45pm.

In the Special Olympics 100m hits, Tiyanjane Henry and Nancy Verani qualified for the girls’ final, while Blessings and Godwin made it to the boys’ final, all to be contested today.

In table tennis, Malawi completed the team event but did not qualify for the semi-finals.

The mixed doubles event saw Malawi finish within the top eight, while singles matches begin today at 9am at the Showgrounds.

In tennis, singles games continue today, with Atupele Kadammanja being the only Malawian in the main draw.

In volleyball, Malawi’s girls’ team defeated Namibia 3–2, placing them at the top of Pool A with four points from two matches.

They will face Lesotho today at 8am.

The boys’ volleyball team, however, lost 0–3 to Zimbabwe, placing them third out of five teams in their pool with three points.

So far, Team Malawi has earned one silver medal and five bronze medals, marking a promising run at the Region 5 Youth Games.

The athletes’ strong performances continue to raise the nation’s hopes for more podium finishes in the coming days.
