MEC opens nomination window for 2025 general elections amid rising political anticipation

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has today officially launched the nomination process for political parties and independent candidates aiming to contest in the upcoming general elections.

The highly anticipated exercise marks the formal beginning of candidate selection, laying the groundwork for what is expected to be one of Malawi’s most competitive electoral seasons in recent history.

The nomination process, which starts today, will run until September 14, giving aspiring candidates and their political groupings a specific window to submit their credentials to the Commission.

This period is crucial for political parties and independents alike, as it determines who will be officially recognised on the ballot for the September 16, 2025 general elections.

The launch ceremony is being held in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city, and has attracted a diverse gathering of election stakeholders.

Representatives from political parties, civil society organisations, the media, development partners, and security agencies are all in attendance to witness the start of this vital phase in the electoral calendar.

MEC Chairperson and commissioners are expected to use the platform to reaffirm the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process.

The nomination phase is more than a procedural formality—it is a test of compliance, eligibility, and the seriousness of candidates seeking to lead at various levels of government.

It is also during this period that electoral bodies and the public closely scrutinise candidates’ qualifications, criminal records, nomination fees, and endorsements.

As the nomination window opens, political parties are under pressure to finalise internal primary elections, resolve disputes, and present their most viable candidates to the nation.

Independent candidates, on the other hand, are expected to navigate the process without party machinery, relying on popular support and grassroots mobilisation.

This phase of the electoral cycle sets the tone for the campaign season, where issues such as governance, economic recovery, youth employment, and corruption are expected to dominate the national conversation.

With political temperatures rising and public interest intensifying, all eyes are now on the nomination desks across the country as Malawi inches closer to a potentially transformative election.

The Malawi Electoral Commission has urged all stakeholders to treat the process with the seriousness and decorum it deserves, reminding candidates and their supporters to uphold the rule of law and electoral ethics.

As the country embarks on this critical stage, the integrity of the nomination process will be a key indicator of the overall credibility of the 2025 general elections.
