The Super League of Malawi delivered thrilling weekend fixtures, but one match stood out – the “Mpinganjira Derby” between Mighty Wanderers and Ekhaya FC at Kamuzu Stadium.
The real highlight, however, wasn’t the 1-0 win for Wanderers, but the presence of Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, the team’s sponsor and patriarch, watching his son William Mpinganjira’s Ekhaya side battle it out.
In a clear demonstration of a Family’s Legacy in Football, Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, has been instrumental in shaping Malawi’s football landscape.

As president and board chairperson of Mighty Wanderers, he’s driven the team to success while promoting community engagement.
His son William, on the other hand, has injected youthful energy into Ekhaya FC, creating an exciting rivalry between the two teams.
Kamuzu stadium in the city of Blantyre was the epicentre of football attraction, hosting the “Mpinganjira Derby” the family-driven rivalry showcasing their passion for football, an emphasis in their commitment to nurturing talent and promoting the sport in Malawi.
Its clear, the Mpinganjira’s dedication to football extends beyond their teams, as also seen in the recent initiative to honour 17 football legends with K1 million each, totalling K17 million, the gesture highlighting appreciation for the contributions of Malawi’s football pioneers.
