Telekom Networks Malawi plc (TNM), one of the country’s leading mobile telecommunications companies, has officially launched its 5G network in Lilongwe, marking a major milestone in Malawi’s digital transformation journey.

The launch comes after successful trials of the ultra-fast network which began in 2023 in both Lilongwe and Blantyre. For now, the 5G coverage will extend from Kanengo to Area 2, offering residents and businesses a taste of next-generation internet speed and reliability.

Speaking during the launch event in the capital city, TNM’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd Gowera, expressed confidence in the capabilities of the new technology.

“5G is not just fast—it’s as fast as the speed of light. It opens up endless possibilities for innovation, smart technology, and economic growth,” Gowera said.

Representing the government, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, commended TNM for its forward-thinking initiative.

“A country with a strong digital network is more competitive and progressive in sectors like tourism, education, and health. This launch is a great step toward achieving Malawi’s digital agenda,” he said.

With this move, TNM is positioning itself at the forefront of digital innovation in Malawi, promising enhanced mobile experiences and setting the stage for smarter cities, digital education platforms, and advanced business solutions. The company says it plans to gradually expand 5G coverage to more areas across the country.

As the digital age accelerates, TNM’s bold step signals a promising future for Malawi’s connectivity and development.
