With just weeks to go before Malawians head to the polls, President Lazarus Chakwera is under mounting pressure to regain public confidence, as persistent fuel shortages threaten to derail his chances of securing a second term.

Social analyst Lucky Mbewe has warned that the ongoing scarcity of fuel is eroding trust in Chakwera’s leadership, describing it as a key stumbling block to his re-election campaign.

“Malawians are growing impatient. The fuel crisis has a direct impact on how they perceive the government’s ability to deliver,” Mbewe said

In response, Chakwera has assured the nation that his administration is working tirelessly to stabilize fuel supplies, promising that solutions are underway. But Mbewe believes assurances alone are not enough.

“The president needs to be honest and follow through on his promises,” he advised. “Addressing the fuel problem decisively would be a significant step toward rebuilding public trust.”

As the September 16 elections draw closer, all eyes are on how Chakwera’s government handles this critical challenge—a test that could define his political future.
