Concerned Citizens Give President Chakwera Two Days to Approve DPP Commissioner at MEC

By Suleman Chitera

A group of concerned citizens has issued a two-day ultimatum to President Lazarus Chakwera, demanding that he approve the nomination of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) commissioner to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC). The group has threatened to hold demonstrations if the president fails to act within the given timeframe.

Speaking during a press briefing in Blantyre, group leader Stevie Chimwaza said Malawi’s electoral laws provide for all political parties to be fully represented at MEC. He argued that the current situation, where the DPP’s nominees are being rejected, undermines the principles of fair representation.

“What President Chakwera is doing by refusing to approve names of commissioners from the DPP—now for the third time—is tantamount to undermining the country’s electoral laws,” Chimwaza stated.

The citizens argue that without full participation of all major political parties in the electoral body, the credibility of future elections could be compromised. Chimwaza insisted that the law is clear on the rights of political parties to have their commissioners serve at MEC.

Threat of Demonstrations

The group has vowed to mobilize demonstrations across the country if the president does not approve the DPP commissioner within two days. They believe this will protect democracy and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted transparently and fairly.

Political Implications

This standoff adds to Malawi’s tense political climate as the nation prepares for the September 2025 elections. With both the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition DPP already on high alert, the issue of MEC representation is expected to play a critical role in shaping voter confidence.
