University of Malawi students in Zomba broke into celebration after the Malawi Electoral Commission declared Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Arthur Peter Mutharika the winner of the September 16 presidential elections.
The announcement sparked scenes of jubilation on campus, with groups of students singing, dancing, and waving party flags in the streets of Zomba.
Many students described the victory as a defining moment for the country, saying Mutharika’s leadership offered renewed hope for economic stability and better opportunities for young people.
Some carried placards bearing messages of congratulations, while others played music and organized spontaneous parades that drew large crowds of onlookers.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement, as chants of “DPP woyee!” and “APM woyee!” echoed across the campus grounds and surrounding communities.
Several students expressed optimism that Mutharika’s administration would prioritize education reforms, improve job prospects for graduates, and address the economic hardships affecting many young Malawians.
The celebrations in Zomba mirrored similar scenes in other parts of the country, where DPP supporters gathered to mark what they saw as a historic comeback for their leader.
For the students at the University of Malawi, the moment was not just about politics but about their own aspirations for a better future under new leadership.
Their celebrations highlighted the strong emotional connection between youth expectations and the country’s political direction as Mutharika prepared to take office once again.
