The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has refuted the recent claims circulating on social media regarding the alleged political actions to be taken by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika against some Generals from central and northern regions.
The MDF says the claims indicating that President Professor Mutharika through some senior government and party officials is planning to dismiss 6 General officers (4 from central region and 2 from northern region) in order to pave way for the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Force of their choice, is misleading and does not reflect the true nature of the MDF.
Writing in a statement dated 16th October, 2025 signed by its Acting Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Colonel Paul Chiphwanya, the MDF says it is a family that values unity and diversity ensuring that their recruitment and representation processes cover all districts of the country.
The MDF says it operates under the civilian authority of the government and maintains a strict political stance, saying their commitment is to serve all Malawians regardless of their regional affiliations, and without bias towards specific regions.
It says the allegations suggesting that Professor Mutharika is orchestrating a campaign against Generals from the central and northern regions are unfounded and sensationalized saying this is undermining the integrity of the MDF and its personnel.
In the statement, the MDF says it has channels of communication and that the circulating article does not come from within its ranks and file urging all citizens, including the so called Concerned Generals to refrain from spreading divisive narratives that threaten the country’s nationality.
“The MDF is dedicated to protecting the sovereignty of Malawi and serving its people without prejudice,” reads the statement in part.
The MDF says it stands firm in its mission to support civilian authorities in achieving national goals encouraging dialogue based on facts rather than speculation and remain committed to fostering peace and stability in Malawi.
