Grain trader Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) has significantly scaled up its maize distribution efforts, opening more than sixty maize markets across the country following the purchase of over 28,000 metric tonnes of maize this season.

The expansion targets areas where maize prices have remained high, including Mwanza, Nkhotakota, Mzimba, Likoma, Neno, Nsanje, Nkhata Bay, Chizumulu and Mlowe in Rumphi. Through this intervention, ADMARC is reinforcing its mandate to stabilize prices and improve food access for households facing market pressures.

MIJ Online understands that ADMARC is selling maize at K1,300 per kilogram (K65,000 per 50kg bag)—a move widely seen as timely and pro-consumer amid ongoing price volatility.

Speaking to MIJ Online, ADMARC spokesperson Teresa Chapulapula said authorities are closely monitoring market prices to ensure fairness and availability. She added that the corporation has intensified efforts to make sure farmers and consumers in targeted areas are accessing maize with minimal disruption.

The initiative has attracted praise from stakeholders. Social commentator Isaac Ziba welcomed the move, describing it as a strong step toward easing household food insecurity. He further encouraged ADMARC to consider opening markets in all areas nationwide to maximize impact.

With the expanded market footprint and continued price monitoring, ADMARC’s intervention is expected to cushion vulnerable communities, support farmers, and contribute to national food security during the current marketing season.
