The Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) has opened more than 60 maize markets across Malawi following the purchase of over 28,000 metric tonnes of maize this season.

The corporation says the newly opened markets are targeting areas where maize prices have surged, as part of efforts to stabilise prices and improve access to the staple grain. The targeted districts include Mwanza, Nkhotakota, Mzimba, Likoma, Neno, Nsanje, Nkhata Bay, Chizumulu, and Mlowe in Rumphi District.

According to information gathered by MIJ Online, ADMARC is selling maize at K1,300 per kilogram, translating to K65,000 per 50-kilogram bag.

ADMARC spokesperson Teresa Chapulapula said the corporation is closely monitoring maize prices to ensure affordability and prevent exploitation of consumers.

“Authorities are monitoring market prices, while efforts have been intensified to make sure that maize is accessible to farmers and consumers in the targeted areas,” Chapulapula said.

The move has been welcomed by stakeholders, who say it will help cushion vulnerable households against rising food prices. However, social commentator Isaac Ziba has urged ADMARC to go further.

“While this is a commendable step, ADMARC should consider opening markets in all areas across the country to ensure equitable access to affordable maize,” Ziba said.

Maize remains Malawi’s primary staple food, and price stability is critical as households continue to face economic pressures and food security challenges. ADMARC’s intervention is therefore expected to play a key role in easing the burden on consumers, particularly in high-price districts.
