A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has called on the Police if they have concrete evidence that Former President and MCP leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera indeed broke the law, he should be arrested and prosecuted in a court of law.

Kamphangala said Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is not above the law as per the Republican Constitution and above all, he is not the President of the country, he is just an ordinary citizen who can be taken to court to prove his innocence.

He has dismissed calls from some quarters in the society that are fearing that arresting Chakwera will provoke MCP members and supporters questioning them which members and supporters?

Kamphangala was commenting on reports expressed by Lawyer who is also MCP’s Director of Legal Affairs George Jivason Kadzipatike that he has received reports that the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has plans of arresting Chakwera on Monday, 18th May, 2026 for the walk from MCP headquarters to lay a wreaths at Kamuzu Mausoleum in Lilongwe on the 14th May, 2026.

Kadzipatike is quoted in the media as having said that the wreaths laying ceremony was duly authorized by the relevant government officer who he did not disclose his name saying with the authority granted, Chakwera had the right to enter and lay his wreaths at the Mausoleum.

Kamphangala said according to the DPP statement, the Kamuzu family did not invite Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the MCP to the Kamuzu Day function questioning President Chakwera why he organized the parallel function to lay his wreaths at the Kamuzu Mausoleum as if he was invited?

Kamphangala has accused MCP youth reported to have been ferried from Msundwe, Mponela, Dowa, and other areas to Chakwera’s residence to beef up security in covering the boss of not knowing that government is a machinery which can arrest them all and place them at Maula Prison for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace in the country.

He has appealed to MCP youth to remain in their houses for they were not part of those that are on record of destroying this country claiming that they have stolen a lot from government and them were being given maheu and this should not make them suffer at Maula Prison.

” What is the benefit of covering the boss who has stolen money from them for his intended purposes other than those of the country and the citizens?” Questioned Kamphangala.

He said Chakwera’s arrest in Malawi will not be the first, reminding Malawians that Dr. Bakili Muluzi after he was ousted from presidency in 2004 by Professor Bingu wa Mutharika, he remained in town and was a threat to the DPP government.

Kamphangala said Dr. Bakili Muluzi was tear -gased, arrested and put on house arrest advising the DPP government to put Chakwera on house arrest so that the youth who have been deployed to cover him at his residence stay there for a year and the MCP to pay for them monthly salaries.

He has warned government that before making arrests, it should thoroughly investigate the cases saying Malawians are tired of seeing politicians arrested and within two days, they are out of police cells and their cases ends there.

Kamphangala has finally reminded MCP and President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that they should not cry with DPP arrests, yesterday, they were using the very same police accompanied by MCP youth armed with pangas terrorizing and hacking innocent people in Lilongwe and surrounding places and tear – gas was the order of the day while they were in power.
