President Lazarus Chakwera has today on 3rd March 2024, led Malawians in celebrating the Martyrs day in Nkhata Bay under the theme ‘Remembering our heroes: Upholding their legacy’.
Speaking during commemoration, Chakwera has urged citizens to embrace compassion, love, justice and patriotism.
He asked Malawians to use their knowledge in developing this country after gaining its independence from the colonial rule.
Also in attendees were Vice President Saulos Chilima, former Vice President Khumbo Kachale, Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa, and revered members of the clergy, to name but a few luminaries.
This significant day, preluding tomorrow’s holiday, stands as a commemoration of the brave souls who valiantly resisted British colonialism.
The date, March 3rd, 1959, etched in history, witnessed the declaration of a state of emergency by British Forces, unleashing “Operation Sunrise” and triggering the apprehension of prominent Malawian nationalists.
