DEDZA — Dedza Police Station has impounded 22 motorcycles during a road safety operation aimed at curbing traffic offences and promoting responsible road use among motorists and motorcycle riders.

The operation, conducted on Friday through the station’s traffic department, targeted road users found violating traffic regulations, with several motorcycle riders found operating without the basic requirements for safe and lawful riding.

Dedza Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Beatrice Jefita said the impounded motorcycles were linked to offences including speeding, riding without helmets, riding without valid driving licences and operating without insurance.

“The operation is part of continued efforts by Dedza Police and other road safety authorities to reduce road accidents and encourage road users to follow traffic laws,” Jefita said.

The police operation comes amid continued efforts by road safety authorities to improve compliance with traffic regulations and reduce preventable road accidents.

According to Jefita, enforcement is being complemented by public awareness activities intended to educate road users on the importance of complying with road safety requirements.

She said road safety officers from Dedza Police have also been conducting awareness activities at Dedza Red Cross, where members of the public are being encouraged to obtain valid driving licences and ensure they carry the necessary documentation when using the roads.

The awareness campaign is also aimed at reminding road users that traffic regulations are designed not only to ensure compliance with the law but also to protect motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

Jefita has therefore urged motorists, motorcycle riders and other road users in Dedza to take road safety seriously and avoid behaviours that could put lives at risk.

She particularly encouraged motorcycle riders to wear helmets, observe speed limits, obtain valid licences and ensure their motorcycles have the required insurance before operating on public roads.

The police have warned that road users who disregard traffic regulations risk enforcement action as authorities intensify efforts to improve road safety across the district.

The impounding of the 22 motorcycles underscores the importance of compliance, particularly among motorcycle riders who rely on motorcycles for transport and commercial activities.

Dedza Police has encouraged members of the public to cooperate with road safety officers and make responsible use of the roads.
