The Dominican Republic has once again captured the Miss World crown after 24-year-old Joheirry Mola Dominguez was crowned Miss World 2026, bringing the prestigious international beauty title back to the Caribbean nation for the second time in history.
Mola emerged victorious at this year’s Miss World competition held in Vietnam, defeating contestants from around the world to take the coveted crown.
Her victory marks a remarkable return to the top for the Dominican Republic, 44 years after Mariasela Álvarez won the Miss World title in 1982.
The official Miss World profile describes Mola as an educator, news correspondent, community advocate, founder and professional model. She holds a degree in Business Management and Administration and has worked as a Literature and Social Studies teacher. She is also the founder and president of Voices of Tomorrow, an initiative focused on expanding English education for children and young people in vulnerable communities.
A second Miss World crown for Dominican Republic
Mola’s triumph has revived memories of one of the Dominican Republic’s most celebrated moments in international pageantry.
In 1982, Mariasela Álvarez became the first woman from the Dominican Republic to win the Miss World crown. The competition was held on 18 November 1982 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, United Kingdom, with 68 contestants taking part.
Álvarez’s historic victory established the Dominican Republic as a force to be reckoned with in international beauty competitions.
More than four decades later, Mola has now written another chapter in that history.
The official Miss World organisation says Álvarez’s 1982 victory made her an instant celebrity in the Dominican Republic and a historic figure for the country.
Spain finishes second as Malaysia takes third
In this year’s competition, Spain finished as the runner-up, taking second place, while Malaysia finished third.
The result gave Spain an especially interesting connection to the world of sport.
Had Spain won the Miss World crown, the country would have been celebrating an unusual double achievement involving global rankings in football and beauty.
Spain currently sits at the top of the FIFA men’s world rankings following its victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FIFA confirmed that Spain reclaimed the number-one position after defeating Argentina in the World Cup final.
Spain is also ranked number one in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking. The June 2026 FIFA ranking listed Spain at the summit, with the reigning world champions strengthening their position at the top.
That means Spain currently occupies the top position in both men’s and women’s international football rankings while also finishing among the leading contenders at Miss World.
More than just a beauty crown
Mola’s victory also highlights the changing nature of international beauty pageants, where contestants increasingly use their platforms to promote education, social development and community initiatives.
Before becoming Miss World, Mola had already established herself as an educator and advocate. Through Voices of Tomorrow, she has focused on providing English-language education opportunities for children and young people in vulnerable communities.
She has also worked as a correspondent for Univision New York’s Ventana a Quisqueya, where she highlights Dominican culture, social issues and community stories.
Her background therefore extends beyond modelling and pageantry, giving her a platform through which she can promote education, youth empowerment and social responsibility.
Dominican Republic celebrates another historic moment
For the Dominican Republic, Mola’s victory represents the continuation of a legacy that began with Álvarez more than four decades ago.
From Álvarez’s historic triumph at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1982 to Mola’s victory in 2026, the country has now produced two Miss World winners.
