The Malawi National Football Team (The Flames) have beaten Ethiopia by 2 goals to 1 in the first African Cup of Nations Qualifiers played at Bingu National Stadium (BNS).
Both goals were scored by Gabadinho Mhango from the penalty spot.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera as well as Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima watched the match at the BNS which was filled for the first time by Malawians who came from all corners of Malawi as well Ethiopians who reside in Malawi.
In his remarks, the Head of the Flames’ technical team, Mario Marinica, commended the team for the effort.
“This is a good start and if we continue like this, there is hope that we can find space in Afcon 2023,” said Marinica.

Scorer of the flames’ two goals Gabadinho Mhango expressed gratitude to the President and Vice President for motivating the team saying their presence added extra energy to the flames.
Various ministers and government officials also watched the game from the terraces.
Malawi is in group D alongside Egypt, Guinea and Ethiopia.
