MEC Declares Local Government By-Elections Credible Free And Fair

Malawi Electoral Commission in Mzuzu has officially declared two MCP candidates and one UDF candidate winners in the Local Government By-Elections that were held on 23 August 2022.

MEC Chairperson Chifundo Kachale described the election results as credible, free and fair.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate in Chitipa Wenya Ward, Ronald Kayira, amassed 1663 votes ahead of four other contestants.

Similarly, another MCP candidate, Elisha Mwaikato Winga, tallied 1591 votes beating the other three candidates

In Balaka Shire Ward, UDF candidate, Dickson Jackson Wasili, won the seat with 2545 votes.

MEC Commissioner Dr Chifundo Kachale asked political parties to address voter apathy with their respective followers.

37,844 people registered to participate in the by-elections but only 12, 284 people cast their vote representing 32. 4 percent.
