Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr Kondwani Nankhumwa has commended the United Nations for its commitment and support it renders to the country through its various agencies.
Dr. Nankhumwa made the remarks in Lilongwe on Monday, 5th December, 2022, when he held a meeting with UN officials at the invitation of the UN Resident Coordinator.
The Leader of Opposition, cited UN interventions in food security, social and economic issues as good examples of efforts the UN has made to bail Malawi from some of its challenges.
He therefore, urged the world body to enhance its effort in capacity building among various governance stakeholders including parliamentarians.
On her part, the outgoing UN Resident Coordinator; Maria Ribeiro urged the Leader of Opposition to ensure that the disability bill and the death penalty issues are tackled thoroughly and concluded.
Commenting on the refugee relocation drive by the government, the UN is of the view that the government needed to explore alternatives or other approaches to the matter.
While acknowledging security concerns associated with refugees, the UN observed that the Government was supposed to work within international legal frameworks regarding the rights and protection of refugees.
Dr Nankhumwa was accompanied to the meeting by Hon Yeremia Chihana, Member of Parliament for for Mzimba North Constituency who is also shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs.
