A consignment of 20,000 tonnes of Russian fertiliser recently donated to Malawi is set to dock at Beira Port in Mozambique this weekend.

The lot is part of some 260,000 tonnes of the commodity that the Russian Federation Fertiliser Producers pledged to several African countries via an agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) in July.

The donation was made to alleviate humanitarian challenges stemming from the Russo-Ukraine War, especially in the agriculture sector among African countries.

A tweet by Club of Mozambique – an investor and donor information portal – indicates that the batch destined for Malawi will dock at Beira on 31 December; a month after leaving the Netherlands on 29 November.

While expressing gratitude to WFP the help in getting the commodity in, Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale states that the fresh fertiliser supply is expected to supplement the ongoing Affordable Inputs Programme.
