Community members in Mwanza have been urged to plant more trees to conserve the environment.
Malawi Revenue Authority’s (MRA) Deputy Commissioner for Customs and Exercise Cornelius Kakwesa made the call during a tree planting exercise facilitated by the authority Friday, aimed at conserving the environment at Chabweza Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kanduku in the district.
“The district has the biggest border post in Malawi but unfortunately the forests are depleted due to charcoal burning, this does not portray good scenery to travellers hence the need to restore it,” said Kakwesa
He then urged the community members in the area to take special care of the planted trees and manage the natural regeneration for their own benefit.
During the exercise the tax regulatory body donated 750,000 seedlings to the community members to empower them to protect the environment in the area.
Mwanza District Forestry Officer Rex Namwada commended MRA for the donation which he said was timely as the district is fighting charcoal burning which is fueling environmental degradation in the district.
