Councilor for Mlomba ward in Machinga, Alexander Cosmos, who chairs the district’s Disaster Risk Management committee has been arrested for allegedly diverting maize relief items for flood survivors induced by Cyclone Freddy in the district.
Machinga district council spokesperson, Martin Chiwanda has confirmed that the councilor is currently being questioned at Liwonde Police station to understand the whereabouts of the relief items.

Police are yet to comment. However, an inside source at the council, Cosmos diverted a 30 toner truck that had about 588 bags of relief maize.
