Roads Fund Administration (RFA) recently donated 160 desks valued at K17.5 million to Kalinyeke Primary School in Dedza District as part of their corporate social responsibility to the people surrounding Kalinyeke Tollgate.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Thursday, RFA Director of Finance, Alexander Makhwatha, disclosed that government has realised about K5.7 billion in revenue from Chingeni and Kalinyeke tollgates since they were operationalised.
Makhwatha said the money will be used to finance various road projects across the country starting with the M1 Road.
“But we decided to give back to the communities where the structures are located first, that is why we decided to make this donation,” he said.
On his part, Dedza District Council Director of Administration, Chris Salaniponi, appealed to RFA for more donations to help the council provide quality social services to its people.
He said it was sad to see that even though the district collects billions of kwacha in revenue for the country through the border post and the tollgate, it continues to face a lot of challenges in education, health, roads and other infrastructure.
“We asked government to at least allocate five (5) per cent of the proceeds from the tollgate to Dedza District Council so that we can fund some of our development projects, but we are yet to get an answer,” he said.
Kalinyeke Primary School Head Teacher, Clara Nthombozi hailed RFA for making the donation, saying girls had difficulties standing up in class as they were sitting on the floor, which limited their movement amongst boys.
