Mzuzu City dwellers were shocked on Monday morning when the Mzuzu City Council demolished structures built in some of the unauthorized areas.

The city authorities conducted a dawn operation to bring down the illegal structures, citing concerns that they could cause problems during the upcoming rain season, particularly since some were blocking drainage systemsJoe Thomas Nyirongo Resigns from Malawi Congress Party, Cites Frustration and Health Issues.

The operation significantly impacted vendors operating at the parallel market structures near Zigwagwa (Matabwa) Market posing dangers to the nearby M1 Road motorists.

Some traders had previously complained that these structures were harming their business. Two weeks prior, Zigwagwa market traders had lodged a complaint with the Council, threatening to stop paying market fees if the ‘Panorama’ market wasn’t removed.Karonga United FC drop points again at home

The Council assured the traders that they would address the issue and advise the plot owner to utilize the land for its intended purpose. However, attempts to contact the owner proved unsuccessful.

According to MacDonald Gondwe, Mzuzu City Council’s Public Relations Officer, the dawn raid aimed to restore order in the city.

“It’s an ongoing operation to restore sanity in our city. We’ve warned those erecting these structures, which pose a danger to property and life during the rain season,” Gondwe stated.Homeland Ministry Proposes New Refugee Camp Site In Chitipa

He cautioned that those continuing to flout the rules would eventually face the consequences of city bylaws.
