Charles Mchacha, the Director of Operations for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has issued a stern warning to the government, stating that if certain issues surrounding the voter registration process for next year’s elections are not addressed, the DPP will organize nationwide protests to shut down Malawi.

Mchacha made these remarks during a press briefing, expressing concerns that the current voter registration process is unfair and could potentially undermine the integrity of the 2025 elections. He emphasized that the DPP will not tolerate any actions that could disenfranchise voters, particularly in regions where the party has significant support.

“If the government doesn’t correct these issues immediately, we will have no choice but to mobilize our supporters and organize demonstrations across the country. We will shut down Malawi until the government listens to our demands,” Mchacha declared.

He pointed out that the DPPb believes there are deliberate efforts to manipulate the registration process to favor the ruling party, a claim that has sparked tensions between the opposition and the government.

Mchacha’s call for protests comes as the country prepares for highly contested elections next year, with opposition parties raising concerns over transparency and fairness in the electoral process. The government has yet to respond to Mchacha’s threats of demonstrations.
